Made for Topman, The Wrestler depicts the two seemingly conflicted sides of wrestling champion Marty Scurll, known to crowds as The Villain. In the ring he is all theatre: the costume, the swagger and the roar of the crowd. Out of it, he is someone else entirely.
A warrior by trade but a more reflective soul outside the ring, the film explores ideas of the self, what it is to become an alter-ego and how a person can escape the limelight when needed. It moves between the noise of the ring and the stillness of everyday life, with the clothes carrying both sides of the man.
